Ricky's Philosophy

img 03 v4

My number one goal as a practicing, professional musician myself, is to provide the opportunity for students to experience the fulfilment, excitement, confidence and life-long skills that music and learning an instrument has instilled in me.

I believe that learning the guitar provides so much more than just the skill of learning an instrument. It provides a student with a sense of identity and a feeling of confidence that will emanate through their complete academic, social and emotional experience at school.

About Ricky

I was that kid at school that wasn’t super academic and wasn’t amazing at sports. At lots of schools, if you don’t assimilate with either of those, school can be a bit tough. Luckily for me, music was my thing. Not only did it give me a sense of identity that made me want to go to school, it set me up for my future. A future that I would have never had if I didn’t have the opportunity to learn an instrument at school.
With a love of singing, performing and songwriting, I formed and fronted indie rock band City Riots for over a decade. We released three EPs, one full-length album, enjoyed airplay from triple j, Nova, Triple M and US College Radio (peaked at #87 in the Top 200) and were widely acclaimed by the likes of Rolling Stone. We toured the USA, the UK and Australia countless times and shared stages with The Smashing Pumpkins, The 1975 and The Living End to name a few and played festivals such as Big Day Out (Aus), Soundwave (Aus), The Great Escape (UK) and CMJ (USA).
As well as City Riots, I have done television performances, played guitar with a tonne of successful artists and co-written songs with the likes of Dean Lewis, Morgan Evans, Shannon Noll, Jarryd James and more. I have achieved Gold Sales for a song I co-wrote for New Zealand artist Benny Tipene, ‘Lonely’ which debuted at #2 in the New Zealand charts.
Outside of physically playing and writing music, I have previously sat on the Australia Council Assessment Panel for Federal Funding of the Arts for contemporary and classical music and the Arts SA Contemporary Music Funding Panel. I also have a Bachelor of Science degree (who’d have thought?!).
Whilst these days my focus is on growing and nurturing Australia’s future rock stars, I’m still an active member of the Australian music industry, and write and perform whenever I can squeeze it in!
